How I Failed at Being the Perfect Wife and Mother

Category: Book cover, Publishing
Client: Mirror Fiction
Year: 2020
The book explores the societal expectations and biases placed on women through the real-life stories of seven individuals, each personally interviewed by senior journalist Chen Yumei. These are stories of women who have escaped from marriage, struggled within relationships, and ultimately awakened to their true selves.

Although the title suggests “failure,” the book is in fact a powerful narrative of transformation and self-liberation. The cover illustration was inspired by traditional wedding water rituals, reimagined through splashing forms that symbolize breaking free from confinement. This visual metaphor challenges conventional femininity while echoing the moment of release shared by the women in the book.

The interior illustrations are based on key symbols from each chapter, reconstructed to convey not suffering, but the strength and calm that follows transformation. These images aim to inspire women in similar situations—reminding them that they are not at fault, not sacrificial figures, and certainly not alone. After a life spent responding to others' expectations, perhaps now is the time to listen to their own voice.
